Libraries are important centres of informal learning. The place to go to find out more about the history of a place, family or person. They are also invaluable as sources of help about anything that troubles a person , and as places to get information on one's community - for volunteering, interest groups, campaigning groups. Volunteers in libraries can never take over the duties of a professional librarian - they simply won't have the training, experience or commitment to do that. The spirit behind the opening of the first public libraries in the 19th century, still applies - and more so - today. That is, to help people help themselves, intellectually, socially, and culturally.

I have had a library ticket for over 65 years. I can't imagine what my life would have been like without my local library. Books were my refuge and at a time when we couldn't afford to buy them, where else would we have had access.
