Build Britain’s future by investing in libraries
CILIP, the UK’s library and information association, has issued a call to Boris Johnson to “set aside the campaign rhetoric and build Britain’s future by investing in libraries, information and knowledge for the 21st Century”.
After the success of the #VoteLibraries campaign, which saw four of the main political parties mention libraries in their manifesto commitments, CILIP has challenged the Prime Minister to bring people together and build Britain's future by investing in libraries and developing the vital, trusted, infrastructure which brings learning and opportunity to every corner of the four nations. Nick Poole, Chief Executive of CILIP, said, “The UK’s fantastic, modern public library networks reach every part of the country. From the Midlands Engine to the Northern Powerhouse, Scotland to the South East, libraries are an incredibly cost-effective way to deliver on key policy agendas.
Austerity has wreaked havoc on the quality, consistency and accessibility of our public libraries, seriously undermining our ability to deliver quality services for everyone, reducing the overall library estate and triggering the loss of thousands of dedicated professional staff. (TWEET THIS)
The £25m investment in libraries through the Cultural Investment Fund is welcome – and library leaders and staff will be able to use it to change lives for the better. But it represents roughly 1/10th of the capital investment we need to deliver a world-class library sector over the lifetime of this Parliament.
We therefore call on the new Government to use the Queen's Speech this week to mandate the creation of a National Library Improvement Plan and matching investment, empowering us to deliver the modern, professionally-run, forward-facing and transformative libraries Britain deserves.” (TWEET THIS)

In addition to calling for concrete commitments to public libraries, CILIP’s 2019 Manifesto for Libraries, developed in partnership with Library Champion Bobby Seagull, also highlights the need for a National School Library Strategy, a review of and investment in prison library provision and commitment to building the UK’s knowledge economy.
